The Snug - a sort of soapbox

Loud music in pubs.

Why? Surely people come to pubs to talk? To their friends, to the opposite sex and hell, even to order a drink. How do bar people put up with the noise? They must be going deaf considering the ever increasing din that assaults the ears in too many pubs.

Too often, I seem to wake up Sunday morning with a sore throat and it's not because of the beer (well, I don't think so!). No, it's from shouting to my friends all night.

How many times have you been in conversation with people and you don't have a clue what's being said? You nod and look earnest or else you laugh when everyone else laughs. You usually say, "yeah" every now and then but then to your horror you realise you've just agreed that Keanu Reeves is a good actor.

Now background music is fine. A thumping beat five feet from my eardrums is not.

People go to pubs to talk (and drink of course). If I want music I'll go to a club and shout in there for a few hours.

Some pubs in Dublin are worse than others. The Hairy Lemon springs to mind. It could be a very nice pub except the bar staff insist on having blaring music. The last time I was there, I saw people leave because the music was too loud and there was a clear area around where one of the speakers was placed.

So, please pub staff, spare us and yourselves the incessant and annoying music.

It's good to talk.
