FAQ
- answers to questions I get asked most of the time
Firstly,
if your're looking for pubs or other information
I get many
emails from people looking for information on all sorts of things usually
to do with pubs (obviously) but also some other stuff. So before you drop
me an email, try these sites first. You might get lucky.
Google
global search engine www.google.com
If it's not listed here, it doesn't exist. The best search engine around.
Niceone
www.niceone.com
More of a directory than a search engine as such, but plenty of Irish
sites listed.
Golden
Pages www.goldenpages.ie
Telephone book for Ireland. Not the easiest site to use and crap search
engine, but keep trying.
Local
Ireland www.local.ie
Links and resources for all things Irish. Worth spending some time looking
around. The company behind it has gone bust but the site still exists.
Entertainment
Ireland www.entertainmentireland.ie
Every event of any type that is happening or about to happen in Ireland.
Questions
& Answers
I'm
coming to Dublin for New Year's Eve. What's happening?
Not too sure on the situation for that at the moment. I usually avoid
Dublin city centre on that night. Some of the larger places will charge
in, I would say. I have no idea how you would get tickets in advance.
You would have to know where you were going. Most pubs will be serving
until 12.30 so you would have plenty of places to go to without paying
in.
Things
will also be a little complicated too after midnight as the Euro becomes
the official currency of Ireland on Jan 1st. So if you order drinks at
12.05, the pubs should be giving you back change in Euros!! It could be
chaos. You have been warned!
One
site to keep an eye on:
www.entertainmentireland.ie
Show
what's on and where.
I'm
looking to work in Dublin or in a pub
There
are hundreds of jobs in Dublin at the moment in all areas. You would have
no problem getting a job. When you arrive in Dublin, pick up a copy of
our daily newspaper, the Evening Herald. Their classified adverts
have hundreds of jobs in all sectors.

See list of web sites at the top. Try these first.
That's what I use when someone asks me for information.
Where
can I find pubs which have music?
This
excellent site will help you www.entertainmentireland.ie
or you can try Musical Pub Crawl www.musicalpubcrawl.com
Why
is <pub name> not listed?
No
particular reason. Maybe I haven't got around to it - there are hundreds
of pubs in Dublin city centre and I have no intention of visiting them
all. Or perhaps the place is just not worth reviewing. I don't go into
the city as often as I used to and I don't get any money for my troubles
either!!
What
about hens & stags parties?
Dublin has become really popular in recent times for hens and stag parties.
However, many pubs, especially in the Temple Bar area don't want them
anymore. The Stags & Hens section
has more info.
Any
info on places to stay in Dublin?
Try here
What
should I wear for going to pubs?
As little as possible for women! No seriously. Casual is the name of the
game. Runners or sneakers are the only items frowned upon in many places.
And bouncers, sorry, doormen don't like large groups (4 people seems to
constitute a large group somehow).
What
are the opening and closing hours of pubs?
Details here
What
is the age limit for pubs?
According to the law, it is 18 years of age. Some pubs are more strict
than others, not many mind you. Girls with makeup will usually have no
trouble. Teenie boys might have more difficulty. ;-)
Is
it true that pubs shut on Good Friday?
Yes. And Christmas Day.
What
about prices?
More info here
What
about places for more 'adult entertainment'?
There are a few lap dancing places around town. Angels and Club
Lapello to name two. No idea how good or bad they are (honest). See
the Hotspots section.
Where
can I get laid/pick up women/men?
Now, now. Easy Tonto. Try the Hotspots section
again.
What
about gay/lesbian pubs?
The most famous gay bar is the George on South Great George's Street.
I have no idea about lesbian bars. Try this site for more info: Dublin
Gay Guide
Where
are some decent nightclubs?
This site is about pubs. ;-) However, there are few places to check out.
Here's a list
on this site.
I
want to do a pub crawl
Good for you. Try here for some options. There
is also the Dublin
Literary Pub Crawl Or for something a bit different, try the Dublin
Bus Ghost Tour. For something a bit different try the Dublin
Bay Sea Thrill. Well worth doing. It's a blast.
What
are good pubs for watching sports?
Dublin gets very, very busy for sporting events especially the Six Nations
Rugby. [More on the rugby here] Check out
this section on pubs for sports.
U2,
U2, U2
U2 are shareholders/owners of the Clarence Hotel in Temple Bar.
It has a nightclub called The Kitchen. They have been known to
drink in a pub along the quays of the River Liffey called The Dockers
which is near their management offices and Windmill Lane Studios (where
that graffiti covered wall is).
I
own/manage a pub/don't like your review/and please review our pub
Great. Delighted for you. Now sod off and count the massive pile of money
you lot are making. I really don't care what you think. I only review
pubs when I'm good and ready to do it. And I won't announce it.
I'd
like to open an Irish Pub in my country/area
Would you now? There are thousands of Irish pubs around the globe. Do
we really need another one? Ok, ok, more information on opening an Irish
pub can be found here: The
Irish Pub Company but be warned, it's not cheap.
Why
does the Editor look like Brad Pitt?
Good fortune I guess. ;-) Or perhaps a good photo editing package more
like....
And
are you available?
Em. No. I have a gorgeous wife called Barbara.
